Locksley Spotlight spotted Holsteiner stallion

Locksley Spotlight (born 1984) was the first spotted Holsteiner sport horse stallion sired by the Holsteiner stallion Churchill (v. Cor de la Bryere – Magister – Heimleiter stam 127). His dam Miss T Dame was mostly thoroughbred and sired by Everett’s Son xx with a thoroughbred grand dam on mother’s side, Vay II xx. Spotlight produced color well to mares of dark base with a lot of chrome.

Morton Cappy Smith, legendary horseman of the millennium, came to free jump him numerous times. Jeff Marsh (popular auctioneer of sport horse sales in the 80’s and 90’s) quoted Cappy to say Spotlight was one of the top 3 raw jumping talents he had ever seen. Cappy came to Blacksburg to see him jump still shopping him and would jest that a lifetime supply of black shoe polish would seal the deal. This color was a week day horse (cattle working) not a weekend horse (jumper classic) though Cappy often rode a pinto colored horse in the hunters and jumpers.

Spotlight showed and placed in hand (5th) at Dressage at Devon and later in the amateur hunter ring with owner Gail Guirreri. He had a perfect step between fences, auto lead change and beautiful jumping form. Spotlight had more than enough scope for the jumper ring but trainers Vick and Pauline Russell expected perfect rounds from his green owner rider at 3 foot before moving up. The judges appreciated Spotlight's natural ability with good ribbons. Warioto Farm (KY) noticed him as well at Culpepper. Had he been owned by someone with more means, he would have been a very famous hunter. "He was my best teacher and I still learn from my experiences with him 30 years later." Gail Guirreri.

Spotlight passed at only ten years of age under questionable circumstances. The year before his death Spotlight sired a spotted colt out of the Holsteiner mare Frascati by Fasolt (last pure bred Holsteiner stallion). Broadway boogie-woogie was a very elastic mover and caught notice from Holsteiner association (AHHA) and dressage judge Liselott Weindick. The Holsteiner Verband did not approve a possible sport book that might have helped AHHA funding and the possibility was dropped.

Locksley Spotlight is grand sire to Captain America who is fondly called Cappy and currently stands stud in Millwood VA where this journey started 30 plus years ago. Cappy is only 4% appaloosa blood making his foals to warmblood and thoroughbred mares just 2% outcross. Cappy's half blood brother Claussen by Calato was a team horse for Germany (jumpers) and would have jumped in Bejing Olympics had it not been for a trailer injury in Spain. He was later sold to the US and has a notable show record in grand prix jumping. The perfect mare going forward is the long lined jumper or dressage mare with a dark base color and lots of chrome. A grand daughter of Calato (sire of Claussen) and Constant (sire of VDL Chin-Chin) as well as a dressage mare by Charmeur - Rosenthal -- Dinard --- Landgraf mare have been bred to Cappy for 2020.
