About Cloverlone Broodmare Farm

Champagne by VDL Chin-Chin with Arsia Ardalan

Cloverlone Broodmare Farm has been breeding Holsteiners and spotted Holsteiner sport horses since 1986. Cloverlone breeds sporthorses with a combination of old blood Holsteiner substance with the modern lines, movement and curves of an American hunter. Thoroughbred, anglo-Arab and Selle Francaise blood has always been important to a modern jumping horse. Having known Fasolt, the last pure bred Holsteiner in the world, Gail knew he would keep a place in history, especially in breeding at Cloverlone. His powerful shoulder, neck arched from the whithers without breaking, elegant head and tough legs was impossible to ignore. Carefully combined with blood for length of stride and lighter frame, his power and elasticity shows through many generations.

Breeding Holsteiners started with a lucky find of Champagne v. Chin-Chin in a winter cow pasture at Locksley in Millwood, VA. He was living out with other colts, all with long hair and slightly feral. Champagne's dam, a TB mare by Authenticity (by the stallion In Reality), gave him an American look with extra substance (Chin-Chin was out of a Farnese mare). Chin-Chin was in America a brief time and even won ribbons showing as a dressage horse at Devon (DAD). At the annual AAoBoHH auction Chin-Chin jumped down the chute and then jumped the 7' barrier. He was purchased by Mexico for 90k. When he placed 5th individual jumpers at the Seoul Olympics the phone rang. Mrs. Joan Irvine Smith of The Oaks in San Juan Capistrano CA purchased Champagne. Champagne had sired the stud colt CHINN out of Frascati v. Fasolt along with a few other foals including CHINN's full sister and a colt Chamois out of the TB mare, Flighty Birthday. Chamois was later bought by Morton Cappy Smith, then Joan Irvine Smith and finally Joe Montanna. To this day the Chin-Chin sire line is still present in Cloverlone broodmares and a CHINN son, C-Picasso.

Breeding Holsteiners in America has changed quite a bit since the 80's. AHHA and the Verband frowned upon the use of TB blood in stallions. Since then, much blood has been added and I don't see as often the tough horse that once existed. The range of motion and athletic ability has improved without doubt having added blood in stallions. Cloverlone breeds the dependable stams to these modern stallions. Qui Dandy Windsor Z, a stallion by Quidam de Revel out of a Cassini II - Caretino -- Lord stam 890, stands at Cloverlone and is available fresh semen. He produced a colt in 2016 out of a Libero H - Marlon -- Nimmerdor mare that will likely be available in 2019. They are ideal to any foundation type Holsteiner mare on our farm as well as modern mares.

Cloverlone started a line of spotted Holsteiners in the late 80's. The third generation stallion, Captain America, is 96% Holsteiner/xx and 4% Appaloosa. He can produce color to warmblood mares bringing the percentage down to 2% outcross. Many imported horses also have the possibility of 2% unknown breeding if you dig deep enough. Cappy's dam, B-Cinderella stam 5585, was a sport tested and premium Verband Holsteiner mare. Her full sister produced Claussen, a team jumper horse for Germany. Cappy himself is powerful with jaw dropping movement. He is being bred to long lined mares at Cloverlone. With the inflation of cost in breeding, numbers are few. Once ones sees him move and jump, his talent is accentuated by his color not dependent on it. The first filly has dark spots and a white stripe in her mane. We lost a spotted colt to late term abortion in 2018. He was dark bay with a full blanket. Though heartbreaking, we have proof that his ability to produce color is higher than expected. Chrissy, a Charmeur - Rosenthal -- Dinard --- Pilot mare is in foal to Captain America for 2019.

Cloverlone collected the last offspring of R-Saluut II. R-Flash Gordon by Saluut is out of the same dam as Captain America, B-Cinderella. She also carries R blood through her dam sire Romanow v. Ramiro. Flash has jumper scope and character much like his sire. His first foals are due this year. Rubi v. Cocktail Jet (Calato - Pilot) out of a Constant stam 95 will be very exciting to see. Both foals are available for purchase and Flash is available at stud fresh shipped and frozen.
